Know your newborn’s skin structure:

Skin in human body is a great donation by nature. Thus every baby is protected by the skin surface, extending all over the body. The skin is formed up by three layers of cells made into tissues act as a barrier, from the perils penetrating from outside. The basic functions of the skin are – regulating the body temperature at a standard-level; storage of water and fat; serving as sensory organ; prevents water loss from inside the body and bacteria from outside.

Of the above, the last function of prevention of bacteria from outside sources is very important, as otherwise your baby will suffer from skin-related problems, like rashes (the very frequent and irritating problem found in 99% of infants); bumps, spots, pimples and white-heads etc. In addition, there are cradle-caps appearing in the first two months of the baby; prickly heat in hot summer; laundry infection by usage of heavy detergents for clothes that come into contact with the baby’s skin; or extremely inconvenient skin infection called Eczema, which gets aggravated by usage of alkaline soaps and detergents.

How to keep your baby’s tender skin healthy?

You must understand that your baby’s skin is so delicate; and the cells and tissues are in the developing stage. Although nature has provided defense mechanism in the skin, full protection is possible only when your baby grows. Until then, you need to support the defense mechanism by not harming it by use of unwanted substances.

The skin of all newborns is dry by nature. Later on it grows gradually into a full-fledged oily-skin by hormone secretion, and formation of an acid-mantle inside the skin surface. This acid mantle is the powerful defense mechanism, which protects the outer invasion of bacteria and viruses. The acidic substance is measured by a chemistry notation – pH – meaning “potential of Hydrogen”.
The pH of the fully-grown up adult skin is less with acidity, to neutralize the harmful contaminants penetrating from outside. New born baby’s skin pH will be somewhere from 6.5 to 7.5. So it is imperative that you should use soaps, detergents and other chemicals with lesser pH up to 5.5, if you wish to help the baby’s skin defense barrier healthy.

Say No to Baby Soaps:

From the above it is clear that you must not harm the defense barrier of your loving baby’s tender skin, if you want to keep away from the hardships caused by skin-diseases and infections. The irritating and itchy skin will totally spoil the mood of your baby, and cause you unwanted heart-burns. All the commercially advertised baby soaps are alkaline in their pH content being more than 8 to 10.

Dr. Reddy’s Lab has come forward with “Daffy” the ideal soap-free Bathing Bar, with pH content of only 5.5. All you have to do is click http://www.childskincare.in/about-skin/baby-skin/ to know more about newborn baby skincare tips!
